Yup. Someone representing ‘Regina Spektor’ and ‘Warner Brothers’ must really hate us. 17 notices today and 6 yesterday. What’s confusing is that there’s no information about what content or copyright we have supposedly violated, because all the emails go like this:

Hello,

Regina Spektor has…

I think someone posted photographs that Regina and famille did not want posted concerning a personal, private matter.  Honestly, she, just as the rest of us, is entitled to keep that part of her life that she does not want to share with the world, to herself.  She communicates with us plenty, both by her work and on the ‘net.  I think it only fair that we leave it at that.

Best Music of 2011

This did not seem to be as great a year for music until I started putting my list together when it became clear that this year’s top 10 list had to be expanded to 12.  Even so, it still could not fit either Fleet Foxes, Decembrists and Lucinda Williams or Kathleen Edwards or Eilen Jewel or Gillian Welch, The Bridge School 25th anniversary CD, another for the benefit of flood victims in New York any of the other things I heard this past year.  This was the stuff I kept listening to over and over:

1. The Best Imitation of Myself, Ben Folds
2. Searchlight, Only Son
3. So Beautiful Or So What, Paul Simon
4. Boardwalk Empire, Vol. I
5. Out of the Ocean, Bess Rogers
6. This is the New Year, Ian Axel
7. Metals, Feist
8. Be Here, Rachel Platten
9. Hard Bargains, Emmylou Harris
10. All of the Miles, Lightyear (Lauren Zettler)
11. ‘Round Midnight, Karrin Allyson
12. Bon Iver, Bon Iver

My rule against “best ofs” or compilations was broken a year or so ago, and the Folds thing is just too good to ignore. Yes, Regina appears on the Only Son record, and the song they sing is outstanding, but the rest of the album is great, too, starting with the first cut. Paul Simon’s is his best in years. Bess Rogers, Ian Axel, Rachel Platten and Lightyear/Zettler are still secrets, but ought not to be. Bon Iver is worth listening to many, many times.  You can let stupid television shows or the hype machine/”Grammy awards” tell you what is worth hearing, or you can open up your ears.  You might not come up with the same list as mine, but you’ll have a real good time hearing stuff other than that being pushed on you by the forces that be.

Robert Earl Keen - Merry Christmas From The Family

I have heard on the radio many times (Imus in the Morning, particularly) but it is indeed one of the great ones

Robert Earl Keen - Merry Christmas From The Family

You’ll never heard it played in stores or on the radio, but if there was ever a Christmas anthem, this is it. For me, nothing else really captures the true meaning of the holiday.

Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Stop the Austerity Train Wreck!

The biggest question right now on Planet Washington is whether the congressional supercommittee will reach an agreement.

That’s the wrong question. Agreement or not, Washington is  on the road to making budget cuts that will slow the economy, increase unemployment, and impose additional hardship on millions of Americans.

The real question is how to stop this austerity train wreck, and substitute the following:

FIRST: no cuts before jobs are back – until unemployment is down to 5 percent. Until then, the economy needs a boost, not a cut. Consumers – whose spending is 70 percent of the economy – don’t have the money to boost the economy on their own. Their pay is dropping and they’re losing jobs.

SECOND: Make the boost big enough. 14 million Americans are out of work, and 10 million are working part time who need full-time jobs. The President’s proposed jobs program is a start but it’s tiny relative to what needs to be done. It would create fewer than 2 million jobs. We need a big jobs program – rebuilding America’s crumbling infrastructure, and including a WPA and Civilian Conservation Corps.

THIRD: To pay for this, raise taxes on the super-rich. It’s only fair. Never before has so much income and wealth been concentrated at the very top, and taxes on the top so low. Go back to the 70 percent marginal tax we had before 1980. And include more tax brackets at the top. It doesn’t make sense that any income over $375,000 is taxed at the same 35 percent, even if it’s a billion dollars. And tax all sources of income at the same rate, including capital gains.

FOURTH: Cut the budget where the real bloat is. Military spending and corporate welfare. End weapons systems that don’t work and stop wars we shouldn’t be fighting to begin with, and we save over $300 billion a year. Cut corporate welfare – subsidies and special tax breaks going to big agribusiness, big oil, big pharma, and big insurance – and we save another $100 billion.

Do you hear me, Washington? Do these four things and restore jobs and prosperity. Fail to do these, and you’ll make things much, much worse.

There are so many reasons to treasure Jenny Owen Youngs.  For those of us of a Certain Age, her feel for the stuff that moved us when we were younger, is just another one of those reasons.

Favorite Songs - “Tell Me Why” by Neil Young

Neil Young’s Harvest Moon is one of the first records I ever heard and subsequently appreciated as an ALBUM, a complete thought.  His voice and songs are hypnotic to me.  Also his wardrobe, especially certain fringed leather pieces in which he has been photographed over the years, is a constant source of wonder and inspiration for me.

“Tell Me Why” appears on After the Gold Rush, which has a Wikipedia entry I found most interesting (especially the part about Quantum Leaper/Total cylon Dean Stockwell).

Side note: I think this will absolutely have to be the last performance video I make before improving my video/audio capabilities.  Sorry everyone.

++++++++++

“Favorite Songs” is a new video series in which I’ll be covering songs strictly because I love them.  No bells, no whistles, just music that I think is great.  Watch the inaugural video (for “Ring of Fire”) and stay generally up-to-date via my YouTube channel:

Tonight, “Here is a Heart” will be on Switched at Birth!  Woo!

So, not exactly my kind of show but I watched it to see how they used the song, and was happy to see the result.  Then I had to play the whole song, uncut, for myself.
